Transponder keys are becoming more and more popular, and in fact, almost all new cars in today's age are manufactured with a transponder car key. To find out about transponder keys and what has made them so popular, read Keytek® Auto Locksmiths blog all about transponder keys!
What is a Transponder Key?
A transponder key is different to a traditional car key as they have microchips inserted in them, that transmit a low-level signal from the key to the receiver, which is located in the car. The microchip that is in the transponder key has been programmed by the manufacturer to have a unique serial number that will only match up to the digital serial number in the car. The receiver then uses radio frequency identification to detect the serial number, and if the serial number that is identified is correct, then the car will lock and unlock.
What is a Transponder Key Used For?
Transponder car keys are mainly used for the high level of security that they provide a car. They are able to help deter and prevent theft by rendering the ignition lock ineffective, because if the car can't detect the transponder key's microchip or serial number, then the car just simply won't start.
Also, as the transponder key's digital ID is unique, it creates more potential combinations than the use of standard cuts on a traditional car key and reduces the chances that someone else's car key could be used in your car.
How Do I Know If My Car Key is a Transponder Key?
The best way to identify whether your car key is a transponder key is by looking at its physical shape. A transponder key has a chip or a radio frequency identification transmitter in the head of the key. The plastic bow where you would normally hold the key will be thicker than a standard key of it's a transponder key. You will also be able to tell if you've got a transponder key if the hey has to be near the ignition switch or it won't start.
What is the Difference Between a Transponder Key and a Standard Key?
There is a big difference between a standard key and a transponder key. A transponder key has more layers of security compared to a standard key. Also, with a standard key, you will have to manually lock and unlock the car doors yourself, as well as starting the car with the key. But with a transponder car key all you have to do is have the keys near the doors of the car and the car will then automatically lock and unlock. The same goes for starting the ignition up, as with a transponder key all you have to do is place the key near the ignition and it will start up and you'll be ready to go!
