The majority of new cars sold today have keyless entry and keyless ignition. As they are so popular, this Keytek® Auto Locksmith blog will break down what a keyless entry system is and how it works, as well as how safe it is for vehicles.
What Is Keyless Entry?
Keyless entry is a system where you can unlock car doors without needing to use a car key. This works with the car being able to automatically sensor when the key fob is nearby so it unlocks the car door. The car will also lock itself when the engine has been turned off and the car doors have been closed after you have left the vehicle.
Having a keyless entry system is more convenient than having a car where you need to use a traditional key, for example if you are in a rush you don’t need to worry about getting your keys out and wasting time trying to unlock the car physically.
How Does Keyless Entry Work?
A keyless entry system will use radio signals that are emitted from the car, and the key fob will search for these signals. When being near the car, the vehicle will send out a short-range radio signal and the key fob will send a signal back to the car, ultimately unlocking the car doors.
Advantages of Keyless Entry Systems
Convenience
One of the main reasons for keyless entry systems being created is that it’s more convenient for car owners as it saves time locking and unlocking the vehicle, which is great especially if you are in a rush and you can just jump straight into the car!
Prevents Lock Outs
Another great advantage of a keyless entry system for your car is that it takes away the chances of getting yourself locked out of your car. As the car doors open when the key fob is near, and close when the engine and doors and shut, you don’t have to worry about locking your keys inside of your car. This then takes away those frustrating moments of being locked out of your car from leaving your keys in the vehicles!
Are Keyless Entry Systems Safe?
Although keyless entry systems are much more convenient for car owners, they don’t provide any extra security than a car that requires a traditional key to unlock and lock it. Cars that have a keyless entry system are at risk of being victims to relay theft.
